The People Who Speak Your Language 🌹

Come, come sit with me, grab your drink and pull up a chair.

Okay, I know I hit you with a good blog on Monday, but you know me — my head just keeps moving from one thought to another.

And hun, the thought that popped out this time was this:

When was the last time you had a conversation with someone you truly trusted?

I mean really trusted.

The kind of person who would listen.

Wouldn't mock you.

Wouldn't weaponize what you tell them later.

Would genuinely care about what you're saying.

The kind of person who lets you be completely yourself.

No filters.

No pretending.

No editing.

Because that's what trust does.

It gives us a place where we can stop editing ourselves.

And the more I thought about that, the more I wondered...

How many people are walking around every day editing who they truly are because they don't trust that people will like the real version of them?

Take me for example.

Lord knows I don't always say the right thing.

I mix words up.

I get sayings wrong.

Sometimes a story comes out sideways before it gets where it's supposed to go. πŸ˜‚

But I can do that with my people because I trust them.

Oh, they'll laugh.

But not in a way that hurts me.

Not in a way that makes me feel small.

They laugh because they know me.

They know what I meant to say.

Around them, I don't have to edit myself.

I don't have to stop and think about every word before it leaves my mouth.

I can just be Lisa.

In fact, some of them would probably tell you they speak "Lisa language" by now.

Have I had to edit myself?

The answer would be yes.

There have been times in my life when I held pieces of myself back.

Not because I was trying to be someone else.

Not because I was being dishonest.

But because I wasn't sure it was safe to be fully me.

I wasn't sure that if people really knew me, they wouldn't use it against me later.

And honestly?

That's a scary thought.

To feel like you have to hide pieces of yourself because you're afraid they'll be weaponized instead of understood.

The more I've thought about trust, the more I've realized that maybe trust isn't about secrets at all.

Maybe trust is about having at least one person in your life with whom you can be completely yourself.

The person who sees the real you.

The person who knows your quirks.

The person who understands your heart even when your words get tangled up.

The person who doesn't expect perfection.

The person who lets you laugh, cry, stumble, grow, and simply be who you are.

Because honestly, I think all of us spend enough time editing ourselves.

We edit ourselves at work.

We edit ourselves around strangers.

Sometimes we even edit ourselves around people we love.

But every person deserves a place where they can put the editor down.

A place where they can be fully themselves.

A place where they don't have to earn acceptance.

A place where they are known and loved anyway.

On my podcast, you get the full Lisa. πŸ˜‚

The mixed-up sayings.

The wrong words.

The stories that take the scenic route before getting to the point.

And do you know what?

That's okay.

Because the people who care about me aren't listening for perfection.

They're listening for me.

So maybe that's what trust really is.

Not perfection.

Not agreement.

Not never making mistakes.

Maybe trust is finding the person — or people — with whom you no longer feel the need to edit yourself.

Whisper: The greatest gift we can give another person is a place where they no longer feel the need to edit themselves.
